Petersburg, VA - Southside Regional Medical Center (SRMC) expands the Robotic Surgery program by welcoming two new robotic surgeons to the team of employed doctors at Southside Physicians Network (SPN). Urologist Dr. Eugene Park (formerly of Urology Specialists of Virginia) and Obstetrician & Gynecologist Dr. Zvonko Spasic (formerly of Dominion Women’s Health) join Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Tejwant Datta as the newest robotic surgeons in Petersburg and the Tri-Cities. Dr. Datta was the Tri-Cities first robotic surgeon and has performed nearly 200 robotic procedures in his time at SRMC. With this team of surgeons, patients in the Tri-Cities can now have robotic procedures performed for numerous conditions such as urologic, gynecologic, hernia, general and bariatric. Robotic-assisted surgery may offer less pain, lower the risk of infection, reduce time in the hospital and speed up recovery.

Eugene L. Park, M.D., is board certified with the American Board of Urology and provides care to patients in central Virginia and the surrounding area. Dr. Park specializes in treating diseases of the prostate, kidney, ureter, bladder, adrenal gland and genital area. He is skilled in minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant conditions, kidney stone surgery, cystoscopy, urinary endoscopy, vasectomy as well as medical management of urologic conditions. Dr. Park has extensive experience in robotic surgery and in 2017, he surpassed 1,000 robotic surgeries. Dr. Park will be seeing patients at two locations in Petersburg and Chester.

Zvonko Spasic, M.D., Board-certified OB/GYN, joined Southside Physicians Network in 2019. He pursued his medical education in Bosnia and then established his career in women’s health in the Richmond area. As OB/GYN Chief Resident at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Medical College of Virginia, he was awarded the esteemed Wetchler Award for teaching and leadership. Dr. Spasic has extensive experience with robotic surgery, performing more than a 1,000 procedures since 2007. In addition, he was the first physician on the East Coast to perform a hysterectomy using a Revolex laser robotic surgical system. He truly enjoys a challenge and problem solving to help his patients. Dr. Spasic works with high-risk pregnancies to develop the best plan to ensure the safety of mom and baby. Dr. Spasic will be seeing patients at two locations in Petersburg and Prince George.

Dr. Tejwant Datta is board certified and is the Director of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at Southside Regional Medical Center. In addition to bariatric surgery, he brings a wide variety of advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures to his patients. Dr. Datta has a special interest in complex hernias (hiatal, ventral, incisional), esophageal procedures and intestinal surgery. Dr. Datta performs robotic sleeve gastrectomies and robotic lab band removals.

Also, new at SRMC is an upgraded surgical robot. This new robot comes with improved video capabilities including an immersive 3D-HD heads up display, allowing the surgeons to see clearer. The new design also gives more access to the surgical site to increase maneuverability and precision.
